Transmeta - a privately funded company founded in 1995, was doing something big for the last few years, but no one knew what it was. Rumors were numerous since they employ many remarkable people (for example Linus Torvalds - creator of Linux). Recently they posted on their website that on January 19 of 2000 they will announce what is it they are working on. So today is the day. So they are making so called smart microprocessors geared for modern and future mobile computes, thus fast, cool, with low power consumption and x86 compatible. They achieve it by delegating many of the functions from transistors on the CPU to software. You can read more about it at their FAQ page. I think it's a big step in modern computing. crusoe by transmeta
